Wood care products

posted by crossteam

With barstools, dining tables, sideboards, some pieces of the kitchen furniture, living room furniture and office furniture being made of wood, it is important to use the right care products in order to enhance durability. Due to stringent environmental laws that have been introduced over the past decade or so, it is now slightly trickier to take care of wood furniture that it used to be. This is because these regulations have outlawed the use of the chemicals and shellacs that used to be so popular.

The products that have been introduced as alternatives have different reactions to polish and wax and you must be extremely cautious about making use of cleaners that were not manufactured for use on wood. With the older products, like shellac, it was impossible to damage the wood, but now it is very easy to damage the surfaces, especially when you use cleaners that are not specifically designed for such use.

For daily dusting of wooden furniture, general dusting products are recommended. Polishes and waxes should not be used too frequently since they tend to build up and will eventually make the finish look dull. Monthly polishing is what is recommended to ensure that the piece of wood furniture continues looking good.

Different polishes and waxes have varying degrees of sheen and the best way to find out what effect they will have on the surface is to apply a little to the underside or a concealed part of the furniture before applying it to the top. This will ensure you do not make mistakes, in case the sheens do not match.
