With all the underfloor heating systems that are currently available on the market, one of the options that is oftentimes overlooked is heating mats. This method employs mats or heating pads consisting of wires that generate heat as an electrical current is passed through them. This heat then travels up through the floor, heating the room.

Although this is a great DIY underfloor heating project for the avid Do-It-Yourself’er, you should still employ the services of a certified electrician in order to connect this system to the home’s electrical source. Here are some preparatory steps to take prior to contacting the electrician for the final hook-up procedure:

Step #1 – Make sure the floor is clean and then lay out the mat making sure that it fits the space it is intended for.

Step #2 – Check the manufacturer’s specifications for preparing the “thinset” (adhesive mortar) and then spread it over the area using a trowel.

Step #3 – Spread the mat out over the thinset, pressing it down using a grout float (usually made from rubber). Make sure that the heating mat is placed into the thinset.

Step #4 – Install the flooring you have chosen. Remember that if you are using stone or tile to insert the floor sensors about 12 inches in from the edges prior to laying down the thinset and continuing.

Step #5 – Contact a certified electrical contractor in order to connect the heating mat to the underfloor heating thermostat , which they will then wire into your circuit breaker.

There are many good reasons to buy contents insurance even though it is rarely required to do so. A contents insurance policy is something you purchase to cover items based in your home. Some insurers offer contents insurance on a standard house insurance policy, some do not. Some insurers offer contents insurance as a complementary policy with discounts given for the purchase of a second policy. In these difficult economic times there are insurers that offer a small contents insurance policy with the purchase of any home insurance.

What exactly is covered by contents insurance? More than you might imagine. We are all used to buying buildings insurance that covers obvious items such as the house, garage and outbuildings, but what about the things inside the house?

Each contents insurance policy should be customised to fit your needs, but to give you an idea of how important it is, here is a list of some things covered under a typical contents insurance policy and which are covered against theft, fire, vandalism, flooding and earthquakes:

Entertainment systems, jewellery, clothing, books, DVDs and CDs, furniture, curtains, carpets and computers.

Many people do not realise that items outside the home are also covered. For example, your contents coverage may include theft of a handbag or luggage and other similar incidents.

One note: Very expensive or “luxury” items may require a separate “premium” policy or may be added to your existing coverage. Be sure to check with your insurer for details.

There are a huge number of sofa beds on the market today and they all offer added flexibility in terms of additional sleeping space and comfort.

All sorts of materials are used in the construction of sofa beds, from leather and cotton to attractive suede effects and polyester covers. You can choose the style and material that best complements your home.

Sofa beds can be purchased as two or three seater beds for the living room or smaller fold out sofa beds for guest rooms. You can also find them as chair-beds, which tuck nicely into the corners of a box bedroom, leaving valuable space in the middle of the room rather than it being taken up by a rarely used bed.

Foam mattress sofa beds are the cheapest form and are usually small in size with a few loose cushions. These are not terrible durable, as a rule and should only be used as occasional beds.

‘Clic-a-clac’ sofa beds are much sturdier, with a metal frame that clicks into place as it is converted to create either a bed or a sofa. The only drawback with these sofa beds is that they are not really suitable for the living room, because the metal frame will be visible.

Futons fit in well just about anywhere and are, in addition, very stylish, being made from good-quality materials as a rule and perfect for small apartments with their contemporary look and dual functionality.

Underfloor heating systems are not some new technology that has been recently developed. In fact they date back over 1000 years to Korea. There are two ways to approach the installation of an underfloor heating system – either hire a professional contractor or do it yourself as a DIY underfloor heating project. There is a lot to consider when you are deciding which route to take, but if you are mechanically inclined, the DIY course of action can be beneficial.

In the UK, DIY underfloor heating projects have become quite popular for a number of reasons. However, the primary reason is because it is more cost-effective to do it yourself – and that means a lot today considering how unstable the economy has become in the past couple of years. Just be aware that some underfloor heating kits are easier to install than others, so do your homework and research this before you jump into the project. Remember that failing to plan could mean that you are planning to fail.

Search the internet to find the highest quality and type of underfloor heating systems at the best values and compare several underfloor heating kits. One of the key benefits of using the internet while searching for the right system is that it enables you to compare the advantages and disadvantages of each type of underfloor heating system as well as comparing the costs. This will help you decide on the type of system (electric, film heating, hot water, or mat) that you want to install.

One of the best ways a DIYer can update the look of an older home is by removing the artex from the ceiling. Artex is the UK trade name used to describe a water-based surface coating that allows the surface to be textured. Because artex applied before the mid 1980s may contain asbestos, before embarking on a DIY removal, it is advisable to seek the advice of an asbestos specialist.

If the artex in your home or building proves asbestos-free, then removing it won’t be difficult. However, it is a good idea to remember that often artex was used to cover an already-damaged ceiling, so be prepared for what you find – there may be re-plastering involved or, worse-case scenario, the need to replace the whole ceiling.

Before you set about removing the artex, make sure you’ve set up the right working conditions. It’s important that you don’t find yourself straining to reach where you’re working, so be sure to have a step ladders that is of sufficient height or create a work platform from which to work.

There are two basic methods for removing artex: with a purpose-made textured coating remover or with steam via a wallpaper steamer. (Please note: steaming works on unpainted artex only.) Using the purpose-made solution is by far the easiest, but if you choose steam removal, be sure to take care not to damage your ceiling.

If removal isn’t possible or you prefer not to remove it, artex can also be plastered over.

Choosing a mattress to suit your specific needs is one of the most important decisions you make. Considering that you’ll be spending much of the next ten years of your life lying on it, this is hardly an exaggeration. The quality of your sleep has a direct influence on your well-being, and depends on your mattress.

The conventional open spring mattresses apply uniform resistance, which is fine if you have no trouble sleeping, sleep on your own or with a partner of about the same weight. But pocket spring mattresses are worth considering if these don’t apply.

Pocket spring mattresses have springs docked separately in the fabric, acting independently to body weights.

Foam memory mattresses react to body heat by differentially softening and moulding slightly to your movements. Maybe foam memory mattresses work psychologically as well, drawing on faint memories of going to sleep in your mother’s arms.

Always allow mattresses to aerate for a week after unpacking to get rid of the chemical aroma, and use the handles on mattresses to rotate them.

The support provided from the springs is more important in mattresses than the number of layers of man-made polymers and natural fibres, and the actual construction of the springs is more important than how many of them there are. Tests by consumer groups have show wide variation in support.

It might also be a good idea to buy mattress covers if your mattresses don’t already have them.

Dreaming of a luxurious outdoor space you can use year round that is comfortable and cosy enough to have dinner in, or chat and enjoy a glass of wine in with friends?

A wooden gazebo can add another living space to your home and enhance the beauty of your garden and aesthetic appeal of your property, without the hassle of building renovations.

Gazebos constructed from wood are sturdy, comfortable and versatile; warm on chilly days and cool and airy on summer days. You could enjoy your garden in all seasons.

The accessories and options available are endless. A built in luxury hot tub with elegant wood surrounding it, a dinner table for six or more guests, and gas heating for the chilly evenings can all be added. A stylish ceiling fan to add a plantation touch to those long summer days, when you can relax on a wicker couch with a long cool drink amid some potted palms could be an elegant touch. A lockable, state of the art barbeque to cook on will provide functionality.

A patio that you perhaps don’t use much can be transformed by adding the luxury touch of a gazebo and relaxing hot tub, providing enjoyment for the whole family. This would be the perfect place to hold birthday parties and perhaps even a wedding ceremony.

A canopy and drapes, and some soft furnishings, can add a more personal feel to your gazebo entertainment space.

Garden gazebos come in many styles from elegant to ultra modern, from rustic to sophisticated. Most are made from weather resistant wood and built to last and add beauty to your home for years to come.

Have you heard of electric underfloor heating? If you’re like most people, you may be thinking that it is an amenity that only the rich and famous have. Well, you couldn’t be more wrong. Today, electric floor heating is a viable and affordable solution to heating your home during the cold winter months. In fact, it is increasingly popular.

Underfloor heating is a noiseless and efficient way of heating your house. Because you can’t see the system at all – no radiators, no vents – it also is a chic and stylish way to heat your home. Though underfloor heating has been used since the Roman Empire, advances in technology have made it an affordable option for everyone, not just the elite.

Electric underfloor heating systems have grown in popularity over the last couple of years primarily because everyone is concerned about rising heating costs and energy efficiency. Unlike radiators, underfloor heating systems will warm an entire room evenly rather than just a single corner. This will reduce damage to furniture, paint, and wallpaper throughout your home as well.

Additionally, because there is no bulky radiator to deal with, you can arrange your furniture any way you like. With warm floors, the possibilities are seemingly endless when it comes to home design. You can use anything you want – cement, natural stone, marble, tile, and just about any other floor covering.

When electric underfloor heating systems are installed properly, they require very little maintenance. They rarely break down and are most conducive to households with members that have allergies, breathing issues, and other sensitivities.

When searching for the most competitive deal on home insurance, the best way to get started is to compare home insurance pricing and coverage options. There are four ways to gather information and see actual house insurance quotes that meet your needs.

Firstly, contact a home insurance broker. This is a great live resource, as home insurance brokers can answer your questions in real time. Still, their contacts are limited to the insurers they have deals with, so you won’t get as wide a spectrum of options as you might from other sources.

Secondly, you can go directly to the insurer. Also known as ‘direct writers,’ insurers can skip that middle step and deal with you directly. This eliminates time delays and commissions that a broker might charge. Still, to compare home insurance, you’ll have to contact many different companies. That could mean a lot of leg work for you and will take up a lot of your time.

Branded providers are your third option for gathering house insurance quotes and information. Sometimes large brands, such as supermarket chains, might dabble in other areas like insurance sales. Again, a branded provider limits your options to the companies they deal with, so you might be limiting your chance to find cheap house insurance.

The fourth option, or the full search provider, might be the most comprehensive choice available. This online service prompts you for your information, lets you fill out what you’re looking for, and returns results. You can compare home insurance side by side, line by line. Sites such as Moneysupermarket.com and Bestdealinsurance.com are examples of full search providers.

Guests turning up unexpectedly can be a real cause for concern if you have limited space in the house. A good way of accommodating them is by having a sofa bed ready and waiting. The sofa beds of today are stylish and flexible and come in a range of designs, styles and materials.

With cotton covers, suede and other effects and a range of different styles, you can easily choose a sofa bed to suit the decor of your home. The traditional sofa of two or three seats is very popular and can be folded out to create a full-size and comfortable bed. Alternatively, you could go for a smaller chair bed or corner sofa bed, depending on the space available and the layout of the room.

The least expensive form of sofa bed uses a foam mattress with loose cushions and a base that folds out onto the floor. Though they are designed for occasional use only and are not terribly durable, they are ideal for guest rooms.

Sofa beds of the ‘clic-a-clac’ frame variety click over and fold out to create the bed and can be used as regular sofas too as they are usually more durable.

Futons are another popular guest bed option, although they don’t usually look too good in living rooms, as the metal frame is normally visible. Also there is no disguising the fact that they are clearly a fold-up bed, but again they are ideal for bedrooms where they can save enormously on limited space. Some futons can be very stylish and even include extra space beneath for storage.
