Underfloor Heating for Kitchens

posted by crossteam

Although underfloor heating systems are ideal for any room of the house they are perfect for kitchens; what could be better than standing on a warm floor when making your breakfast on a cold morning? Having conventional radiators in a kitchen can make the room too warm and having no heating means that it can be too cold to make working a pleasure.

A serious consideration is the fact that kitchens are frequently short of space, and in this instance underfloor heating systems are one solution to the problem of how to fit in a radiator. The system can be used with either tiled or laminate flooring which are probably the most used flooring for kitchens, and are ideal when getting the floors dry after cleaning.

There is a disadvantage to using this system in kitchens and this is that units should not be fitted over a floor that already has components of a heating or plumbing system embedded in it.  This will not be a problem with new builds, but can cause problems when renewing or replacing an existing kitchen. This is more of a problem in other rooms where there may be furniture which will be moved around from time to time.

Underfloor heating systems take time to warm up but this is not a major problem in a house which is constantly occupied, as the heating will be on more often during bad weather. There are programmable systems, so it can be set to switch on as needed. The underfloor heating thermostat helps to control the temperature, keeping it at a comfortable level.

Formation of Travertine occurs through the rapid precipitation of calcium carbonate, such as a waterfall found especially at the mouth of a hot spring or in limestone caves, where it forms stalactites and stalagmites in a similar way to that of limestone deposits. Travertine has a wide variety of uses in the construction industry and has been used over the centuries in the construction of many famous historical buildings; the most famous of these is probably the Colesseum in Rome. Other buildings have benefitted from the use of the naturally forming Travertine; the Getty Centre in Brentwood Los Angeles California comes to mind. Travertine has always been evident on high class buildings in wash rooms, reception areas as well as outside cladding. Travertine is characterised by pitted holes and troughs in its surface, these occur naturally, and are usually filled before it is polished to the required finish.

Travertine has a multitude of uses in both the home and in commercial premises the example of the Getty centre where cladding in Travertine is one example. But internal wall and floor tiling is where Travertine comes into its own. External patios and conservatory flooring using Travertine give a classical and truly rustic look and feel, here the Travertine will have probably been tumbled to it a chipped corners and a rough unfilled finish. You will find a variety of natural colouring and banding in the Travertine caused through the changes in the water when this was being formed, pure colours such as ivory can be selected through a grading process, bathroom areas benefit from this higher grade of Travertine. Buying your Travertine through a specialist importer will give you access to advice on which Travertine is the best for your particular requirement.

Considerations when renovating your house

posted by crossteam

Renovating or updating your house can not only make it a better place to live, but also adds value to the property. Most home renovations such as painting and decorating are DIY projects and can be done by the homeowner, but more complex jobs like fitting a kitchen should be left for the professional fitters and electricians.

Updating the bathroom has become a popular project for a homeowner and adds a great deal of value to the home if done correctly. Again, the painting and decorating and even the tilling and floor laying can be done by the homeowner, but fitting the bathroom suite or new shower enclosure should be done by a qualified plumber.

Other popular DIY projects are gardens, where the homeowner can easily lay decking or paving stones and plant trees and flowers to create stunning results. At the end of the day only do the DIY projects you are happy to do and leave the rest to the professional builders, electricians and plumbers.

How are quartz worktops made?

posted by crossteam

Quartz worktops are made from a combination of natural quartz and epoxy resin which is vacuum pressed to create standard slab sizes. Quartz worktops have become popular with homeowners because of its strength and durability as well as its hygienic properties and low maintenance needs.

Quartz worktops and slabs are manufactured in an automated and monitored process and starts by blending the raw materials together in a big mixer. Next, the mixture is poured into a mould and then compacted with a special vacuum machine that vibrates the mixture at the same time. The quartz slab is then cured using a kiln heated to 90 degrees Celsius for 30 minutes; this bonds the mixture together giving it its strength. The slabs are then polished to give a high quality finish and pass through a quality control process to ensure the highest quality.

Now that all the hard work is done, all you have to do is choose the colour and size of your quartz worktop and begin experiencing the benefits of this great product.

Simple Ways to Add Value to Your Home

posted by crossteam

You may not be planning on moving house immediately, but improving your home in sensible ways can add significantly to the value of your property. Here are a few ideas, some DIY, some more in the field of property development.

Building a well-designed extension can add between 10% and 50% to the value of your home. Choose wisely though, if you’ve got a couple of bathrooms, but a claustrophobic kitchen, the kitchen should win as the site for extension. Adding a glass extension to a small dining area can create the enchanting effect of eating al fresco whilst being protected from the elements in centrally heated comfort. Unless it’s a major project, like adding a new storey or doubling the floor area, you won’t need to employ architects, but a good builder will be invaluable. Even if you can’t afford a new kitchen, just replacing the doors, wall tiles and worktops and installing new appliances can give it a dramatic facelift.

Replacing old, tired bathtubs, basins and WCs doesn’t necessarily involve calling in a plumber, none of these is too difficult to install if you’re not changing their locations. Replacing the tiles and flooring, too, can make the room look fabulous.

A painting and decorating facelift, both inside and outside the home, may be a little time consuming, but can have a truly dramatic effect, making your property look like a gleaming show home for relatively little cost.

Finally, if your carpets have seen better days, getting a new one; bold, funky colours and stripes are in vogue at the moment, will add a razzle-dazzle finishing touch.

A stunning patio area courtesy of Travertine tiles

posted by crossteam

You can make your patio area stand out from the run of the mill and get away from all those fake “York” stone and other cement based products by buying and laying natures own superior product Travertine tiles with a chipped edge and brushed finish in a classy French pattern. These natural stones are hard wearing and will look stunning in just about every setting, all the tiles being completely natural have their own particular characteristics.

Travertine tiles are non slip and ideally suitable for all outdoor use, they can be easily maintained and as a product of Mother Nature will keep their rugged appearance, enhancing any outdoor setting. Travertine can be used for a variety of applications and these can include that different hand constructed barbeque, sunken flower display area, you name it and where stone or cement products have been tried previously, Travertine will stand out.

When the Travertine tile is being used outside, chipped or slightly irregular tiles can be used and often these will offer a more natural look to an area, after all when these were in use a few hundred years ago, machining of edges and “feathering was virtually impossible. One great advantage to the use of these tiles is that apart from looking good, your supplier of Travertine outdoor tiles will be able to supply pallet loads of these at an attractive discount rate; now there is a thought!

A New Look Kitchen on a Budget

posted by crossteam

With the advent of a superb new generation of hand and power tools, DIY is no longer about fixing a wonky melamine shelf to the wall or tiling the bathroom in what looks like glazed crazy paving.

Today, it really is bringing quite serious property development within reach of ordinary people, even if the property being developed is the home you’re living in.

There are plenty of home improvement skills you can teach yourself – you don’t have to be a master builder or an architect. In today’s credit squeezed times, a big budget overhaul of a property may not be realistic, so that loft conversion or extension may have to wait a little longer. There are, however, a few simple improvements that will give your home a real facelift at little cost.

A good starting point is the kitchen: if you’re selling any time soon, it’s likely to be the first place that potential buyers notice. Even if your budget won’t stretch to a completely redesigned kitchen with new units and appliances, simply changing the doors on the cupboards and replacing the work surfaces can convincingly create a modernised feel, especially if you can throw in a new sink and up-to-date taps.

New wall tiles and hard floor covering will also create the illusion of a revamped room. If you’re feeling adventurous, new lighting will add real panache – although approach a qualified electrician to install them safely.

Just finish off by practicing (or acquiring) your painting and decorating skills – a new coat of paint works wonders in lifting a room out of tired blandness into clean elegance.

Heating a laminated floor

posted by crossteam

Due to its easy installation and modern design, laminated flooring has become a popular type of flooring in the home.  Although a laminated floor provides more warmth than other types of flooring, such as tile, installing some electric underfloor heating is still a good idea.

Heating mats are an ideal option for laminated flooring.  These often come as part of heating packs, and include a thermostat and installation instructions. Heating mats are the best option for those looking for a type of underfloor heating that is easy to install.

There are laminate floors that can be used alongside water floor heating, although extra care needs to be taken if you opt for this type of underfloor heating.  The temperature for water floor heating must be kept at a particular level when using it with laminate flooring.  The water tubes must also be installed a certain distance away from the surface.  Guidelines for temperatures are usually provided with the installation instructions.

Another option for laminate floor heating is heating film.  Heating film is ideal for laminate flooring as it provides a soft heat and is maintenance free. It is easy to install, although an electrician may be needed to make any final electrical connections.  Since heating film provides a low temperature, it may be a better option than water floor heating given that you must be careful not to exceed a certain temperature.  This makes heating film one of safest and most ideal options for laminate flooring.

Why is home decorating necessary?

posted by crossteam

Home decorating has become quite important in today’s times so that people can completely benefit from their stay in a particular place. It is necessary because it has a great impact on the quality of life that one is leading.

Also, it is significant because the home is an important part of your overall psychological, spiritual and even functional existence. The visual dimensions of your home are going to have a great effect on your overall psychology once you step inside the house.

It is also important to decorate the house according to the purpose that you want it to serve for you. If the space in your house is well-organized with furniture and accessories, then chances are that your social life will improve making people drawn towards you because of your house. But, if everything in your house is cluttered, then it makes people get the idea of a complete chaos about your home.

You can make decorative modifications in your house that can increase its utility for you. This becomes quite necessary as the goals served by the house change for you. You also form your own self-estimation of your character through the way your house appears.

The house acts as a self-defense system and a haven when you enter it after a long and tired day at work and gets you rid of all your negative thoughts.

The home is a community in itself where things are constantly changing. It is necessary that you lend an element of personal space to that part of the house which is quite important for you. It could be your bedroom, hobby room or a basement and should contain all the things that are dear to you like your sought-after arm chair.
