How Homes and Offices Can Benefit From Vertical Blinds

posted by crossteam

Vertical blinds can bring a number of benefits to the home and the workplace. While many vertical blinds are simple in design, they are also available in a range of fabrics that can complement the home’s interior design. Vertical blinds suit small rooms as they take up very little space, they can be drawn to allow light in through the whole of the window and the long, vertical slats can make short windows appear taller. In the workplace, simple vertical blinds have a smart, business-like appearance.

The practical benefits of vertical blinds include saving money on energy bills. In cold weather, closed blinds can reduce the amount of heat that escapes through windows. In air-conditioned offices, energy bills can be reduced in the summer as vertical blinds can limit the amount of sunlight entering the office, reducing the heat and the amount of time that air-conditioning needs to be used. Reducing the light coming in through a window can also have other advantages such as preventing soft furnishings from becoming faded over time, providing further opportunities to save money at home and in the workplace.

Applying Ceramic Tiles

posted by crossteam

Once you have scored, cut and shaped and placed your ceramic tile you are ready to adhere it to the surface. You will need adhesive and an adhesive spreader. The adhesive spreader will apply the adhesive to the surface leaving ridges. These ridges will smooth out when the tile is applied and they help lessen the problem of having either more or less adhesive than is necessary. Adhesive spreaders that have a flat rubber blade are normally used for grouting work. One of these spreaders will be necessary after you have finished applying the tile.

After the adhesive is applied, place the ceramic tile in the position you determined with the tile gauge. Using tile spacers, move on to the next tile and continue until the area is finished. For larger areas it is best to break the project up into smaller portions. You want to be sure to fix the tile before the adhesive has a chance to dry. After affixing the tiles you can use a damp sponge to remove any excess adhesive that might have got onto the front of the tiles.

Benefits of Roller Blinds

posted by crossteam

When looking for a simple and affordable way to add the perfect finishing touch to home windows, most people today are turning to roller blinds.  These types of window blinds offer many benefits and are a nice way to add a touch of elegance and class to any room in the home.  Roller blinds are available in almost all different shades of colour, so even if your rooms are painted before the blinds are chosen, you can still get the perfect complement or contrast in roller blinds if you’re looking for them!

Roller blinds are very easy to use and install.  The blinds are operated by pulling a single cord to draw or drop the shade.  Roller blinds roll up and down with ease and are the most functional type of blinds available.  Once installed, the blinds can quickly be removed for cleaning.

Roller blinds are available in a variety of materials.  Most people assume that blinds are typically made from vinyl or aluminium, thus making them cheap.  However, roller blinds tend to be available in fabric as well, allowing homeowners to add a touch of softness to their rooms.  Roller blinds can be ordered in suede and leather to provide a unique look for drawing rooms, or they can be light-weight to provide light and airiness to rooms such as kitchens.  These types of blinds are also made to resist moisture, so they can be installed in bathrooms, too.  All in all, the benefits of roller blinds far overcome those of curtains: ease of installation and use, durable for years and great aesthetic value too!

Making Your own Roman and Austrian Blinds

posted by crossteam

Roman blinds and austrian blinds are probably the two easiest blinds to make oneself from scratch at home. Using reasonably inexpensive and widely available components these two types of blind are simple and quick to make. Instructions on how to make roman and austrian blinds can be found on many websites and in home improvement books and magazines.

Roman blinds are hung from a batten securely attached to the top of the window. Usually lightweight to medium-weight material is used, and the blinds are also lined if the blinds are going to be used to eliminate light. Roman blinds lie flat widthways and are not gathered in any way. Metal or wooden rods, called dowels, are sewn into the back of the blind and plastic eyelets are attached level with the rods through which nylon cord is threaded from the bottom. The nylon cord comes out of the top of the blind and is attached in a figure of eight shape around a cleat screwed to the wall when the blind is raised. On account of the rigidity of the rods the blind material should fold into neat overlapping pleats when raised.

Austrian blinds are even easier to make as they are hung like traditional curtains on an ordinary curtain track. There is more material used to make austrian blinds as they are gathered widthways and lengthways, so generally lightweight material is used. Blind tape is sewn vertically onto the back of the blind, at the edges and in the middle. Nylon cord is threaded through the loops in the tape from the bottom, and pulled out of the top of the blind. When it is pulled to raise the curtain, and secured to a cleat at the side of the window, it causes attractive scallop-shaped folds in the blind. The blind material is always longer than the window so that even when the blind is lowered it maintains scalloped folds.

Green Floor Coverings

posted by crossteam

More and more homeowners are going green in their homes, and this includes floor coverings.  Synthetic carpet with rubber backing is not eco-friendly to produce and is quite complex to recycle.  Natural floor coverings have been around for ages, and these materials are currently being rediscovered by environmentally conscious homeowners.

Sisal matting is made from fibres of the agave plant that are woven tightly together.  Sisal is both antistatic and antibacterial, and is very hardwearing.  Sisal is not suitable for use in the bathroom or the kitchen.

Seagrass matting is made using several different types of seagrass, and is naturally antistatic.  It is also stain resistant because it is so tightly woven and coiled.  It can be a little slippery and so is not suitable for use in areas that get damp, or in high traffic areas such as hallways.

Cork comes from the bark of the cork tree, and is usually made into tiles.  This natural material provides added insulation as well as soundproofing.  Additionally, cork will not collect dust.

Jute flooring is woven from the fibres of the stalks of the jute or cocherous plant.  This natural flooring is good for most parts of the home because it is soft and warm.  However, it is also absorbent and so not suitable for kitchens and bathrooms.

Bamboo flooring is a popular option because it is one of the cheaper types of natural flooring available.  It is moisture resistant and hardwearing, and so is very suitable for kitchens and bathrooms.  Unlike wood, bamboo does not warp.  Bamboo grows very fast and is highly sustainable.

In order to make sure your natural flooring is one hundred per cent green, you will need to make certain there is no synthetic glue or sealant used when it is installed.

Introduction to Laminate Flooring

posted by crossteam

In recent years, laminate flooring has become increasingly popular. It is easy to keep clean and appreciated by householders wanting to reduce dust levels for health or hygiene reasons.

Fans of laminate flooring are attracted by the ease of installation, durability and low cost of this modern flooring product.

To look at, laminate flooring appears no different from traditional wood flooring. However, there is no wood at all in laminate flooring, merely a sliver of decor paper sealed beneath a tough protective film. The decor paper is actually a photo image of a particular type of wood which is then pressed and glued onto a high-density backing.

Installation of this modern product is quick and easy. Some types are simply glued down onto a sub floor, while others rest on top of an underlay grid, which raises them off the surface below. Laminate flooring can be fitted in planks that click together, creating minimal mess and are able to be walked upon immediately.

There are many different wood effects and finishes to choose from that suit all styles of interior.

Vertical Blinds – A Great Choice!

posted by crossteam

There are so many choices when it comes to using blinds as a window covering, there are pleated blinds, Venetian blinds, stripped Roman blinds, roller blinds, vertical blinds, not to mention, wooden, fabric, aluminium and plastic. The decision process can often be overwhelming, so here are some reasons for choosing vertical blinds.

There are a huge variety of colours, patterns, textures and materials available in vertical blinds, so anyone should be able to find a style that suits every room in their home. Many vertical blinds are easy to take care of; for example, plastic blinds can simply be dusted, but because they are vertical they do not collect much dust and do not need to be cleaned very frequently. Fabric blinds are either hand or machine washable.

Vertical blinds can be controlled manually or with a remote control. They offer varying levels of privacy, because they can be completely closed, completely open or anything in between. Vertical blinds can be made to fit any size of window or can be fitted to a curved rail for a circular window; they can even be made to fit curved and bay windows.

Working with Sheet Vinyl

posted by crossteam

Sheet vinyl is ideal if you are looking for a floor surface that is cheap, water-resistant, attractive and easy to keep clean. It is sold in two metre widths and comes in two main types for domestic use. The cheaper type of sheet vinyl comes with a backing as well as the layer that holds the pattern and a final layer of hard-wearing vinyl on the top. The more expensive and comfortable types are termed cushion vinyls. These come with an extra layer that is flexible and very often embossed to resemble stone, ceramic tiles and other “natural” surfaces. The advantage of these is that you get the authentic tiled or flagged look but at a fraction of the price.

Both types of sheet vinyl are relatively easy to install. Before you begin laying this type of flooring, provide the loosely rolled sheet with some time to warm up so that it becomes more flexible. The joins between the sheets are more prone to abrasion so consider laying the sheets so that these edges do not fall in the middle of a room. Wider sheets can be bought if you wish to avoid the use of the joins.

Allow an extra 50 millimetres of turn-up at the edges as this can be trimmed off later. Before cutting, crease the vinyl by running a block of wood along the skirting board. Allow the vinyl to settle for a few days before using double-sided carpet tape to stick the edges down.
