Bathroom lighting – for an illuminating effect!

posted by crossteam

One of the most common mistakes that people make when planning bathroom lighting is falling into what is known as the ‘shadow trap.’ This is a condition where, when you view yourself in the bathroom mirror the image that is reflected is not very clear. The shadow trap is especially common with recessed lighting fixtures, such as halogen floodlights. Since floodlights have a very focused way of lighting, the shadows obstruct clear reflections in the mirror.

However, this does not mean that you have to completely do away with recessed lights. What you can do is retain them as the source of general lighting for the bathroom, but use another type of lighting specifically for the mirror or mirrors.

The ideal location for these light fixtures is at eye level or slightly higher, and to either the right or left side of the mirror. However if that is not possible, a diffused light fixture can be installed and this will help in cancelling out the sharp focus of any halogen floodlights.

Having said all that, there are sometimes situations where only recessed lighting can be used in the bathroom. Careful location of these lights can, however, help in overcoming the shortcomings associated with recessed lighting fixtures. One way of doing this is to place the recessed lighting fixtures very near to the mirror.

Explore what is available in bathroom lighting and you will see that the range is very extensive.  It is certain that you will find some item that will provide the answer to your bathroom lighting needs.

Subtlety in Bathroom Design

posted by crossteam

In most cases, subtlety goes a long way when designing your bathroom. Overly complicated designs, poorly planned design elements and clutter can serve to give a cramped and uncomfortable feeling to a room that we should by all rights be totally comfortable in.

There are many ways by which you can achieve a subtler look and feel to your bathroom design, and they can be quite easy to implement as well as being relatively inexpensive. Best of all some of these changes can be done in a matter of a few hours, even to an existing bathroom design.

One of the best ways to improve the look of any bathroom is by the use of subtle and effective lighting. Of course you will want adequate illumination, but there is no reason to have to go with purely functional and sometimes harsh lighting. You can opt to have more than one light source in the bathroom, which will make for a more inviting atmosphere with less glare and harshness.

Light tones can do a lot for enhancing the look and feel of a bathroom. Keep this in mind when deciding on a colour scheme for your entire bathroom design. You do not have to limit yourself to single colour for the entire bathroom – which may give it an impersonal and sterile look – but you can use one primary colour in a lighter shade, with darker and bolder colours as accents on running boards and built in bathroom fixtures and furniture.

The Look of Asia in Your Bathroom

posted by crossteam

Are you in search of a bathroom design that is fresh, unique and possibly like nothing you have seen before? Maybe an Asian-inspired bathroom design is in your future! Asian-styled bathrooms are a great way to liven up what would otherwise be a cramped and dreary space, and it does not even have to cost you an arm and a leg.

One of the characteristics of Asian-styled bathrooms is the appearance of spaciousness that they seem to have regardless of the space that is actually available. This effect is achieved by a careful combination of surprisingly simple elements that work together to produce a serene and calming atmosphere.

A lot of Asian inspired bathroom designs incorporate lighting in distinctive and creative ways. While fluorescent lights are used in many contemporary designs, the traditional Asian inspired bathroom tends to use incandescent lights to impart a warmer and more calming feel. If a cooler, more modern feel is what you are after, you can go with fluorescent lights.

When deciding on a colour scheme, go for light colours that will help reinforce the airy atmosphere of your bathroom. If the results end up a bit more staid and boring than you were expecting, by all means feel free to add a few splashes of bolder colours as accents, or on bathroom furniture and accessories. Just keep in mind that a little goes a long way, and all the colours have to be carefully considered in the context of the overall bathroom design.

Choosing Lights for Your Bathroom

posted by crossteam

If you are looking for a fast and easy way to enhance the design of your bathroom or even to introduce a whole new look, one of the key elements that you should look at is the lighting. Bathroom lighting can be almost considered a separate discipline unto itself, as important as it is in shaping the overall look and feel of your bathroom. With all the many options available in bathroom lights and lighting fixtures, as well as innovative new lighting solutions, there is no longer any need to be restricted to bathroom lights that serve a purely functional purpose and not much else. Today’s bathroom lighting solutions offer you numerous chances to impart a truly unique, soothing, or calming atmosphere to your bathroom.

One of the most effective ways to reduce the harsh glare that is characteristic of so many bathrooms is by installing two or more light sources strategically located. This will serve to diffuse the light, and help add a warmer and more inviting glow.

You may also want to use lampshades on bathroom lights, particularly those that are situated in the vicinity of the sink or the vanity. This will help soften the light and make for a more flattering source of illumination. Of course you will want to install an additional brighter light for those times when you need as much illumination as you can get. Regardless of what type of bathroom lighting solution you go for, strive for visual appeal that does not sacrifice functionality.

Making your bathroom seem bigger

posted by crossteam

If you have been cursed with a small bathroom, we can suggest many options that can add space, or at worst just make it look bigger. Whilst some of our suggestions are inexpensive, others should only be undertaken if you are considering if you are planning to do some major renovation work, in which case it would be wise for us to look at the room before giving you our thoughts.

Assuming that you are not intending to replace all of the sanitary ware adding light to a small room can have a dramatic effect. Placing light fixtures near mirrors is another good way to add light to the room because the light will be reflected. Also mirrors can create the illusion of more space and putting a mirror opposite a window can give the appearance of another window. Putting one mirror opposite another one is an old trick that can and does work particularly if you arrange lighting to strike this.

Consideration when decorating your bathroom

posted by crossteam

A general rule is that all bathrooms require adequate light, good ventilation, plenty of storage, and fittings and fixtures that are as practical as they are attractive. Decorating to a Victorian style with depend to some extent on the style of sanitary fittings that are installed, easier if you are going to replace these with say a free standing roll top bath. Custom made stained glass windows will give an authentic look along with a tiled floor.

For a more traditional ‘English’ look this comfy style is one of the world’s best loved styles and has been since the Victorian era. For that relaxed look we would install traditional styled cabinets in a fine-grained wood of maple, cherry, or mahogany. This would be best finished by a white marble top which could be real or manufactured. A simple way to change the mood of the bathroom when this is complete would be to simply change the towel colours according to the season.
