Care and Maintenance of Your Mattress

posted by crossteam

Congratulations on the purchase of your new mattress! If you have taken time to make the right choice, you will likely enjoy many years of use from your investment. To get the most out of your purchase, proper care and maintenance is a must. Here are a few tips to help you to do just that.

Airing the mattress out
After delivery of your mattress, you should first air it out for a few hours in order to get rid of the factory smell. After this first airing, you should air the mattress on a regular basis by pulling back the bed sheet and exposing the mattress to air. For added protection and cleanliness, it is also a good idea to use a mattress protector underneath the bed sheet.

Promote the circulation of air
If there is a plastic sheet wrapped around the mattress, be sure to remove it. Removal allows the mattress to breathe and prevents the build up of condensation.

Caring for spring mattresses
Because of their design, spring mattresses have to be turned regularly. This type of mattress is prone to going out of shape because of the weight of your body resting on it. Regularly turning this type of mattress prevents it from taking on a quite uncomfortable sleeping surface much sooner than expected.

Caring for latex or visco-elastic mattresses
This type of mattress does not require regular turning, although you may want to rotate it from time to time in order to retain its shape longer.

I turn our mattress every 2 months, top to tail and the front to back.

Our memory foam mattresses smelt for a day or so after we bought it. I’m so glad that we left it standing in the spare room to air out a bit.
