Adding a New Shower to Your Bathroom

posted by crossteam

Adding a shower to your bathroom is almost essential these days.  Regardless of how many baths you might have in your home, having at least one shower among these can be useful.  If you are considering adding a shower to your bathroom, there are a number of things to consider before attempting this do-it-yourself project.

One of the most important steps for any DIY project is planning.  When planning for the installation of a shower, size should be one of the first things that you consider.  Not only does the size of the bathroom need to be taken into consideration but the size of the shower itself is also important.  If you have a small bathroom it might be difficult to install a bath shower combination but a compact shower enclosure might be just right.

Once you have determined the size of the shower you want to install, the next step will be to find one that has the appropriate style to match the design of your bathroom.  Some shower enclosures include a walk-in area that is great for drying off.  This contributes to the overall size of the enclosure but it is a great option if the space is available.

Another thing to keep in mind when preparing for this DIY project is usability.  Some showers might look particularly appealing but they might also be the least functional options as well.  If you know you store a number of items in the shower, pick an enclosure that offers a variety of shelving options for convenience.

Things to consider when looking for a new sofa

posted by crossteam

Mention living room furniture and the first thing that comes to most people’s minds is a sofa. When making a decision to buy one, some of the things you need to take into consideration are style, comfort and the type of fabric that the sofa is made from. It is also important that the one you buy matches the interior design or the decor of the room in which it is going to be placed, whether it is the living room or the TV room. In situations where you see a sofa with a fabric you really like, but which doesn’t match the decor, you can always add decorative pillows that do match.

In general, the more expensive the sofa is the higher its quality is likely to be. In most cases, lower priced models have a frame made out of a softwood, like cypress or pine and this might compromise not only on the quality, but also the style and comfort. The higher priced sofas, on the other hand, are generally more comfortable and of higher textile and construction quality. The brand name is not always synonymous with quality, but what should assure you of high quality is a good frame and soft, rugged, fabrics.

When buying a sofa set it is important to consider how heavily it is going to be used and this may help you decide whether to purchase a cheap or expensive one. In a household where the sofa is going to be used constantly and where there are kids, it is advisable to go for a cheap product, because of the wear and tear it will suffer over a short period of time. It is also advisable to purchase one that has dark colours, since this will help conceal stains.

Heating a conservatory is not an easy task.  This type of room is prone to losing its warmth quickly.  In the past, people have chosen to install everything from radiators to panel heaters in an attempt to keep their conservatory warm when it is cold outside.  Both options have drawbacks including cost and taking up valuable space in the room.  One way to heat your conservatory without such drawbacks is to use electric underfloor heating.

Electric underfloor heating is powerful enough to be used as the primary heating source in your conservatory.  This type of system evenly heats the surface of the floor which then warms the air in the room.

You can install a sophisticated thermostat that will control the temperature of the underfloor heating system.  Programmable thermostats are also available which will allow for more refined temperature regulation as well.  These thermostats provide the flexibility to control the temperature of your conservatory independently from the rest of your home as well.

Installation of underfloor heating in the conservatory can be accomplished as a do-it-yourself project.  An electrician may be required to attach the heating element to the electricity supply.  From there, it is just a matter of properly laying the heating insulation and underfloor heating system.

The cost to heat a conservatory with electric underfloor heating is quite manageable.  Because floors heat up quickly, a great deal of power is conserved.  This type of system also converts the majority of its electrical power into heat as well.

Caring for wooden furniture

posted by crossteam

Wood is found all over the home, whether it is in living room furniture, office furniture, dining room furniture or kitchen furniture.

Furniture of wooden construction is available in a wide range of quality and prices, all designed to satisfy the various requirements and pockets of customers.

The cheapest pieces of wooden furniture usually come in self-assembly packs and it is up to the buyer to put them together. There are various brand names that sell furniture this way and these include Bestar Furniture, Azura Furniture and Bush Furniture, among many others.

Unlike in the past, most wooden furniture on sale today is a mixture of natural or solid wood and veneers made of real wood. The advantage of furniture having a mixture of solid wood and veneers is that the shortcomings associated with solid wood, such as splitting and cracking, which results from excessively humid conditions and so on are eliminated. Veneers also provide the added advantage of greater styling options, since the patterns and finishes are of a higher standard.

Some of the products used to protect wood furniture include wood finishes. These can either be expensive or cheap, depending on the effect they produce. Another way of protecting wood is dust proofing, which reduces the anti-static that causes dust to settle.

To improve the durability of wooden furniture there are methods of construction that ensure a product’s longevity. For example, in the assembly of drawers, a dovetailed joint provides extra strength and ensures the piece of furniture will last longer.

There are a number of things that can fall within the realm of bathroom accessories.  Everything from a heated mirror to a soap dish can be considered an accessory so you can be sure that you will have plenty of options to choose from.

Wall-mounted bathroom accessories are some of the most popular available today.  This can include things like toilet roll holders, towel rails, expanding mirrors, and shelving.  You can find these in contemporary designs that are have stylish finishes like polished chrome and brushed nickel.  Other types of wall-mounted accessories include soap, cup, and toothbrush holders.  These are great options if your counter space is limited.

Installing Underfloor Heating in Your Bedroom

posted by crossteam

Installing underfloor heating in your bedroom will allow you to have a much more comfortable room. Getting out of bed and stepping onto a cold floor in winter can be unpleasant. Underfloor heating will allow you to wake up to a cosier atmosphere and provide you with lots of comfort.

Since your bedroom is likely to have lots of objects on the floor, heating cables may be a good idea as they are designed for these types of rooms. If you have a carpet floor for your bedroom, then you can install underfloor heating, although if your carpet is too thick then you may need to avoid this option. If you have a carpet that isn’t too thick then you can safely install underfloor heating without worrying about any damage being done to your carpet.

Underfloor heating will allow your bedroom to look more modern and will give you plenty of space to arrange certain items, such as a bed or a wardrobe, as you do not have to worry about radiators being in the way. If you are in the process of decorating your bedroom then you can have the freedom of using wallpaper or paint without having to take objects such as radiators into account.

Underfloor heating also provides more comfort for your bedroom than a radiator. Radiators can sometimes cause the room to become too stuffy, which can cause discomfort if you wake up to a room that is too warm. Stuffy rooms can cause headaches and make you feel unwell, and underfloor heating can get rid of this problem by spreading heat evenly and providing a comfortable temperature.

Mirrors for your home

posted by crossteam

Mirrors are an essential piece of furniture in every household. Bathroom mirrors are probably the most common.

When selecting what mirror to purchase, be it as a bedroom mirror or bathroom mirror, one of the important points to consider is where the mirror will be located. This will of course be determined mostly by what the mirror will be used for.

If the mirror is going to be located in the bathroom then the viewing space and convenience are crucial points to consider. On the other hand if the mirror is merely going to be used for decorating walls then smaller mirrors would do. There are also those mirrors that are usually attached to another piece of furniture (fixture mirrors). Some models of Schneider cabinets, for instance, come equipped with their own mirrors.

When buying a mirror it is important to think about the shape. Purely from an aesthetic point of view, it is crucial to have a mirror shape that is in harmony with the style of the room. There are various mirror shapes available and these range from square to oval to arched to geometric to sunburst to circular.

The other thing to think about is the style of the mirror. The styles range from contemporary to modern to traditional to country to exotic to ornate. The traditional style of mirror is symmetrical and is likely to have a dark or richly grained wood as a frame. The contemporary mirror style tends to be sandwiched between traditional and casual style and is characterised by straight clean lines and edges.

Caring for upholstery

posted by crossteam

Whether we are talking about living room furniture, kitchen furniture or office furniture, the upholstery requires proper care in order for it to last. Caring for upholstery also involves keeping it clean, sparkling and looking good.

There are various products on the market that can be used for waterproofing and stain sealing of the fabrics on three piece suites. These products are important, since they keep the upholstery clean, stain free and looking good. Many are stocked by furniture retailers, though cheaper alternatives can be sourced from home improvement shops. The cheaper products are usually sprays, which are easy and convenient to apply to the fabrics and though they generally carry no warranty they are, for the most part, just as effective.

When upholstery becomes stained one of the options is to use a spray cleaner, but this should only be as a last resort and this is especially so for microfiber fabrics. For the best results, when removing a stain or stains from such a fabric, the cleaning needs to be done by using a damp piece of cloth. An old discarded toothbrush can also be utilised, together with a solution composed of water and some soap, either liquid soap or dish soap. The stain should be cleaned in circular motions and only a little of the solution should be used, because over saturating may result in patches being left after the fabric has dried.

As for pillows, the only way to prevent them from appearing old and saggy is adding more filler foam, which can be obtained from most furniture stores.

Contemporary Furniture Design

posted by crossteam

Furniture styles and designs come and go (as do all fashions). Today’s ‘antiques’ were yesterday’s in-thing and today’s in-thing will be tomorrow’s ‘antique’ furniture. A good example of this is what would be considered the contemporary furniture designs of the twentieth century, which are now rightly classified as classics, since they belong to a bygone era.  Living room and dining room furniture is perhaps used differently to how it was 100 years ago, but the extending dining table and high back leather dining chairs are still in great demand.

In today’s world, furniture design tends to fall into three distinct categories, contemporary, retro or modernism. Contemporary is a reference to a type of furniture styling in which the feel is relaxed and almost casual, but in a sophisticated manner.  It is appealing to a wide group of people, each with their differing tastes and individual style preferences. In short, contemporary furniture design enjoys wide popularity, has a high degree of comfort and satisfies the various needs of all members of the family.

The inspiration for much contemporary design stems from the twentieth century, an age that is referred to as the modernism era, and is a blend of various influences that were present during that period. With malleability being a major attribute of contemporary designs, the styling allows the expression of individuality, while still remaining elegant and comfortable and maintaining a high degree of quality and artistry.

With ever increasing numbers of people spending more and more time at home than previously, contemporary furniture design has become desired by many modern families. It is functional, while not sacrificing comfort and style, which leads to a feel of casual elegance. We are currently living in an age of increasing informality and contemporary furniture designs are sure to achieve wider acceptance over the coming years.

Benefits of using underfloor heating

posted by crossteam

There are many reasons why domestic underfloor heating has become a popular option in many homes.  One of the main reasons is that underfloor heating is much cheaper to run than conventional heating as it runs at lower temperatures. You also have much more control over how much heating you use as a thermostat can be installed for each room with underfloor heating.  Conventional heating manages several rooms from one thermostat.  Since underfloor heating uses less energy, it is the ideal choice for those looking for an environmentally friendly option.

Another main reason is comfort.  While conventional heating provides warmth throughout a room, a tiled floor will remain cold.  Underfloor heating allows heat to spread across the whole floor, providing a much more comfortable room. It also reduces build up of mould or mildew, as wet areas on the floor will dry more quickly.  Underfloor heating does not need a fan or blower and is significantly quieter than conventional heating.  This is useful if you are planning to install it in your bedroom.

Underfloor heating gives you the freedom of decorating your home as you wish.  It offers much more space and you do not have to worry about decorating around objects as you do with radiators.  It also allows a room to look much cleaner and more modern.  Also, if you are looking for a safe option, then underfloor heating is ideal as there is no risk of children burning themselves or bumping into heaters.
