The Role of Bathroom Fixtures

posted by crossteam

Bathroom fixtures are an important part of bathroom design, and they can really tie in the rest of the other elements of the room together, as well as impart their own look and feel to the design.

When you are faced with the prospect of designing for a small bathroom – which is so often the case nowadays – bathroom fixtures, play an even bigger role…although not in the spatial sense, obviously. It is more important to plan bathroom fixtures carefully with regard to small bathrooms so that they do not take up too much space, yet perform the function that is expected of them. Bathroom fixtures that are of light colour and smooth surfaces are ideal for this purpose, and can provide a subtle and elegant feel that reduces overall clutter.

Most people opt for simple and sometimes harsh lighting that does not contribute to the aesthetic appeal of the bathroom in any way. You can instead go for bathroom lighting that will enhance the look and feel of the bathroom, and perhaps make it even more inviting and pleasant to users. Proper lighting will also make the room appear a little bit bigger than it actually is.

As much as you would want to fill your bathroom with as many fixtures as you think necessary, you have to be careful about going overboard. Try to plan out your needs well in advance and resist the temptation to add a piece of bathroom furniture or gadget that you really do not have much use for.

The Wide Variety of Options in Beds

posted by crossteam

Shopping for a bed nowadays can be a challenging–albeit enjoyable–task. It is always a pleasure to shop around for something that will give you comfort and satisfaction for many years to come, although the sheer variety of options out there can leave you a bit bewildered. There are still lots of traditional beds to be had, but along with them comes a host of variations that may include leather beds, wooden beds, children’s beds, divan beds, and many more.

With the space limitations that so many people have to live with nowadays, divan beds are becoming an increasingly popular option. These beds actually serve as mattress bases and most feature springs that make it conform to the body’s shape better. A firmer top is also often added, which offers more support.

If you are after style as well as comfort, you may want to look into bedsteads for your divan. These look great in any bedroom, and can be designed to work well with the other elements in your room.

If you often have company coming over to stay the night, you may want to look into folding guest beds. These are great options since they fold out of the way when not in use and can provide a quick place to sleep when you have company over.

Storage beds use space in a thoroughly efficient way by doubling as a storage space for whatever you want to keep out of the way. A divan storage bed is a combination of two design types and is the best of both worlds in terms of space saving and convenience.

Choosing a Bed for Comfort

posted by crossteam

The purchase of a new bed is something that should not be taken lightly. When you consider the fact that you will be spending night after night sleeping–or at least trying to–in it, you will understand the need to have a good, dependable bed that provides adequate comfort and support.

If you have the chance, try out your planned purchase beforehand. With so many different types of beds and mattresses, ranging from day beds and divans to bunk beds and metal beds, there is no way to know how a bed will feel until you try it out for yourself.

In the shop, take your time in choosing a bed that you feel will give you the rest that you need. Don’t allow yourself to be rushed into making a choice. Remember: a bed can be a hefty investment and you will be the one to sleep in it, so it is important to get the best one you can afford.

There is a way to choose a bed with regard to its ability to provide firmness and support. Lie down on the bed and place your hand under your lower back. Now try to move your hand from this position. If it moves freely, then the bed may be too firm. If you have trouble moving your hand, the bed may be too soft. Ideally, you will want a mattress that allows you to remove your hand–but not too easily–thereby ensuring you maximum comfort and support.

Colour Considerations in Designing Your Bathroom

posted by crossteam

When planning a bathroom design, one of the most crucial decisions that you will have to make is what particular colour scheme to implement. This will have a considerable effect on how the occupants as well as the guests will perceive the bathroom as a whole. In fact in many ways, your perception of the bathroom will carry over into the rest of the house as well. It is important therefore to keep the overall look of the rest of the house in mind when choosing colours for your bathroom.

Before you even head down to the home depot and pick up a few cans of paint, you will want to decide what feel you are going for. Are you after a contemporary look – in which case monochromatic colours will work best – or do you want a more traditional and cosy feel. Regardless of your goal, planning the colour scheme to fit in line with your vision will go a long way in enhancing the desired effect.

Colour can also serve to alter the apparent size of a room. Light colours will make a small bathroom look bigger than it actually is, while darker or bolder colours can help pull in the various elements of a larger bathroom, making it more personal and intimate.

Finally, it would be best to choose one or two main colours as the basis of your bathroom design and then choose other complementary colours to accent or enhance the colour scheme that you want.

Different styles of bedroom furniture

posted by crossteam

Since the bedroom plays an essential part in our lives, where resting and re-energising takes place, it is important for it to have a style that suits the individual. In this regard, bedroom furniture can go a long way in helping to achieve complete relaxation.

To develop you own style of bedroom furniture you do not have to be limited by the kind of furniture or decor that already exists, since the scope for modification is almost inexhaustible.

The styles of bedroom furniture available can be classified into four groups. There is the casual contemporary style, which is informal as well as relaxed. Maple, which is a light and glowing wood, fits the bill of casual contemporary style almost perfectly.

Then there is the traditional style of bedroom furniture. As the name suggests this brings back memories of a bygone era, but mostly the eighteenth and the nineteenth centuries. The traditional style has a way of conveying or evoking a romantic mood. Most of this type of bedroom furniture is made from dark woods, such as mahogany and cherry.

We then have the country style, which is synonymous with country cottages and this tends to have something of a rustic appearance. The fabrics that are associated with this style include denim, chintz and linen.

The fourth style of bedroom furniture is the modern one. In this case, the designs are usually linear, perhaps with a blend of various other styles and trends. The simpler the fabric the better and leather is always a winner.

Making Your Bathroom People Friendly

posted by crossteam

One of the recent trends in bathroom design is making it as enticing and people friendly as possible. This actually makes perfect sense as people often spend hours in the bathroom during the course of the day. There is certainly no reason then not to make it as comfortable as the other rooms in the house!

A typical family bathroom is used by most, if not all, the members of the family, so the clutter can build up quite quickly as you can imagine. All of the children’s toys, the medicines, the personal effects…they all need enough storage space so that they don’t get in the way or pose a hazard to the bathroom’s users. You can keep medicines in a bathroom cabinet that you can then lock so that they are safe from children. The other toiletries can then be stored in a separate bathroom cabinet.

One important concern in any bathroom is adequate ventilation. If you have enough space to install windows, you would have enough ventilation for most needs. If space or privacy issues prevent the installation of a bathroom window, you may have to go with an extractor fan.

If you have old or disabled people at home, it is a must to make the bathroom as safe and as comfortable for them as possible. You can do this by installing grab rails and slip proof mats or flooring. Also make sure that they are able to access the bathroom features such as the toilet, bath, sink, towel rails, and mirrors easily and safely.

When Your Child Is Ready for Their First Bed

posted by crossteam

There will inevitably come a time when your child starts clamouring for his or her own bed to sleep in. The good news is that there is an absolute wealth of options available in children’s beds nowadays. Bunk beds are always a popular choice, especially if you have more than one child sleeping in the same room. They make great space savers and provide an element of fun that other types of children’s beds simply cannot match.

When going for a bunk bed, it is important to make sure the older child takes the top bed. The younger child may complain, but this is the best possible way to safeguard against any mishaps. You will, of course, want to make sure the child that will occupy the top bunk is old enough to do so and is fully aware of the rules and responsibilities involved.

In any case, you may want to install guardrails on the top and bottom bunks to ensure maximum safety for both children. Check to make sure the mattresses you will be using are at least five inches lower than the top of the guardrails. Guardrails aren’t of very much use if the child can simply roll over them and fall off onto the floor! Finally, don’t forget to install a safety ladder for easy and safe access to the top bunk. Even if the top bunk isn’t that high, a ladder will make using the bunk bed that much safer.

Things to Keep in Mind When Buying a Bed

posted by crossteam

Beds have truly come a long way in the sphere of human existence, having made the transition from mostly utilitarian pieces of bedroom furniture to almost works of art in their own right. Today, beds occupy a respected place in any bedroom with much care and attention given to their planning and design.

With larger master bedrooms, beds obviously have a more prominent role to play. There is a wide range of materials to choose from when deciding on the purchase of a bed. These materials will have a great deal to do with how the bed fits into the particular room’s design theme or motif. Gone are the days when you could simply purchase a plain base or box spring and make do with whatever mattress that came with it. There are numerous customization opportunities available today regarding bed and mattress combinations. Take the time to consider all of your options carefully in order to get the results you are looking for.

In terms of size, full, queen, or king beds are the ideal choices for most master bedrooms. Keep measurements in mind when planning the design of your bedroom. You will want a bed large enough for your purposes, yet still leave enough space for everything else that you may want to have in your room. Remember: while the bed is probably the most important element in any bedroom, it is not the only piece of furniture you will have in there.

Subtlety in Bathroom Design

posted by crossteam

In most cases, subtlety goes a long way when designing your bathroom. Overly complicated designs, poorly planned design elements and clutter can serve to give a cramped and uncomfortable feeling to a room that we should by all rights be totally comfortable in.

There are many ways by which you can achieve a subtler look and feel to your bathroom design, and they can be quite easy to implement as well as being relatively inexpensive. Best of all some of these changes can be done in a matter of a few hours, even to an existing bathroom design.

One of the best ways to improve the look of any bathroom is by the use of subtle and effective lighting. Of course you will want adequate illumination, but there is no reason to have to go with purely functional and sometimes harsh lighting. You can opt to have more than one light source in the bathroom, which will make for a more inviting atmosphere with less glare and harshness.

Light tones can do a lot for enhancing the look and feel of a bathroom. Keep this in mind when deciding on a colour scheme for your entire bathroom design. You do not have to limit yourself to single colour for the entire bathroom – which may give it an impersonal and sterile look – but you can use one primary colour in a lighter shade, with darker and bolder colours as accents on running boards and built in bathroom fixtures and furniture.
