The Look of Asia in Your Bathroom

posted by crossteam

Are you in search of a bathroom design that is fresh, unique and possibly like nothing you have seen before? Maybe an Asian-inspired bathroom design is in your future! Asian-styled bathrooms are a great way to liven up what would otherwise be a cramped and dreary space, and it does not even have to cost you an arm and a leg.

One of the characteristics of Asian-styled bathrooms is the appearance of spaciousness that they seem to have regardless of the space that is actually available. This effect is achieved by a careful combination of surprisingly simple elements that work together to produce a serene and calming atmosphere.

A lot of Asian inspired bathroom designs incorporate lighting in distinctive and creative ways. While fluorescent lights are used in many contemporary designs, the traditional Asian inspired bathroom tends to use incandescent lights to impart a warmer and more calming feel. If a cooler, more modern feel is what you are after, you can go with fluorescent lights.

When deciding on a colour scheme, go for light colours that will help reinforce the airy atmosphere of your bathroom. If the results end up a bit more staid and boring than you were expecting, by all means feel free to add a few splashes of bolder colours as accents, or on bathroom furniture and accessories. Just keep in mind that a little goes a long way, and all the colours have to be carefully considered in the context of the overall bathroom design.

Care and Maintenance of Your Mattress

posted by crossteam

Congratulations on the purchase of your new mattress! If you have taken time to make the right choice, you will likely enjoy many years of use from your investment. To get the most out of your purchase, proper care and maintenance is a must. Here are a few tips to help you to do just that.

Airing the mattress out
After delivery of your mattress, you should first air it out for a few hours in order to get rid of the factory smell. After this first airing, you should air the mattress on a regular basis by pulling back the bed sheet and exposing the mattress to air. For added protection and cleanliness, it is also a good idea to use a mattress protector underneath the bed sheet.

Promote the circulation of air
If there is a plastic sheet wrapped around the mattress, be sure to remove it. Removal allows the mattress to breathe and prevents the build up of condensation.

Caring for spring mattresses
Because of their design, spring mattresses have to be turned regularly. This type of mattress is prone to going out of shape because of the weight of your body resting on it. Regularly turning this type of mattress prevents it from taking on a quite uncomfortable sleeping surface much sooner than expected.

Caring for latex or visco-elastic mattresses
This type of mattress does not require regular turning, although you may want to rotate it from time to time in order to retain its shape longer.

Designing Your Bathroom with Style

posted by crossteam

The days of staid, plain and merely functional bathrooms are long gone. More and more, today’s bathrooms are designed with increasing attention to detail, with comfort and style taking top priority. Below we offer you some tips on how you can make your bathroom stylish as well as comfortable.

•    Make sure that you have enough space for the doors, windows, fixtures and bathroom accessories, and that people are able to stand and sit in the bath, get in and out and move comfortably.

•    If you have a bathroom that is a bit dated but do not wish to change the room itself, use newer bathroom furniture that work well with each other.

•    If you find that you are a bit short of space, you can create the illusion of more space with bathroom mirrors and shelves that are either made of glass, or use glass extensively.

•    A common problem that many designers have with bathrooms is that the ceiling is usually too high and the walls too narrow. This can be remedied by using strategically placed lights and decorations that will give the illusion of more horizontal space. You can also use a false ceiling with a slatted design. This will help enhance the effect of a lower ceiling.

•    Consider changing the fixtures in a style that is more appropriate with your overall design. Even if they work fine, replacing bathroom accessories and fixtures with new ones that reflect the theme you are going for will work wonders for changing the look of your bathroom.

Dress Up Your Bed with a Bed Skirt!

posted by crossteam

One of the easiest, cheapest, and most effective ways to enhance the appearance of any bed is by using a bed skirt to cover the box spring or base. Using bed skirts will also allow you to use the free space underneath the bed for storing things that you do not want in the way, yet keep fairly accessible.

From a visual perspective, the use of bed skirts is also a great way to liven up the colour scheme of a bedroom and will provide an attractive accent to the solid lines of the bed. Bed skirts are currently available in a wide array of patterns, colours, and styles. You should have no trouble finding skirts that will work with the motif you have planned for your bedroom.

Size is an important factor to consider when buying bed skirts. Be careful to take exact measurements before you head to the store. It is crucial that you get the size right because bed skirts that are too large or too small will disrupt the effect you are going for. Pay particular attention to the “drop”, the distance from the top of the bed’s base to the floor. You do not want a bed skirt with a drop that will stop short or drag on the floor.

After deciding on a bed skirt, let your imagination to take hold. You can opt to add more personal touches to your purchase, such as the addition of lace, eyelets, fabrics, and trim.

Choosing A Vanity Unit For Your Bathroom

posted by crossteam

With more and more bathrooms taking on increasingly prominent roles in most modern homes, a lot more attention is given to the combination of bathroom furniture and the other elements contained within. The vanity is of course the central focal point of any bathroom that is fortunate enough to have one, and it adds an unmistakable air of elegance and class.

In bathrooms that are designed for maximum style and chic, the vanity takes on an even bigger part. In some cases, this piece of bathroom furniture can be seen as the most important element of the room, a central point where you can take as much time as you want – a sort of command station if you will. Given this importance, it only makes sense that the vanity is the most costly piece in the bathroom, and it is true that vanities can be quite expensive. They don’t always have to be however, and you can even update or refinish an existing vanity and make it more appropriate for its new, elegant surroundings.

Thankfully there are many options available in the brand new and used markets. Before you go pick one out however, you might want to consider the overall design of your bathroom, paying special attention to such factors as its size, the colour scheme that you plan to implement, and the other bathroom furniture and bathroom fixtures that you plan to bring in. Once you have a general idea of how you want your vanity to look, take a look at a few catalogues or drop by a few stores and see what is available.

Some Thoughts on Buying a Bed

posted by crossteam

With sleep being such a fundamental need for human beings, it is only reasonable that a lot of thought and planning should go into selecting beds, whether they are leather beds, metal beds, wooden beds, divan beds, or any other variation thereof. When you consider that a less than ideal bed could mean losing up to a few hours of sleep a night, you can see the obvious need to have a good, firm, and comfortable bed.

Here are a few things to remember the next time you are shopping for a bed:

You can’t put a premium on quality. Think of the purchase of a bed as an investment. If you think about how many nights you will be sleeping, hopefully comfortably in it, a good-quality bed will pay for itself many times over in the course of its lifetime.

Quality does not mean high-priced. While you shouldn’t skimp on the purchase of a new bed, you do not have to pay outrageous prices either. There are many beds at reasonable prices that will do a good job of keeping you comfortable.

You will have to replace your bed eventually. No matter how good the mattress is, or how attached you have become to your bed; it will outlive its usefulness after a time. A bed can also cause health issues after a while due to the build up of dust, dead skin cells, hairs, and dust mites.

Designing Bathrooms for Children

posted by crossteam

Designing rooms for children is certainly no easy task. While most adults are quite content to enjoy a room if it at least partially conforms to their tastes, children are another matter entirely. The look and feel of a room can make or break it in the eyes of a child, and can often spell the difference between a room that will be enjoyed for a long time to come and one that he or she will refuse to even enter.

Now take that realization, apply it to a child’s bathroom, and you can see how things become even more complicated. How do you design a bathroom for a child? Of course the personality of the child that will eventually use the bathroom is the first clue. If you are designing with a specific child in mind, it would help to find out about any hobbies or interests that they have, or at least talk to their parents about their preferences in terms of colour and accessories.

What if you are designing a bathroom without a specific client in mind? That becomes a little bit trickier, but a good safe option is to go for a look and feel that is more neutral in nature. The future occupants will then have the option to decorate and accessorize it later on according to their child’s preference. You can achieve a neutral feel with simpler and subtler colours and floor tiles that do not have an overly complicated pattern, and accessories that are more subdued in design and hue.

Planning Out Your Bathroom Floor

posted by crossteam

When planning the design of your bathroom, the floor often takes a backseat to the other elements in the room. It seems that a lot more focus is given to the lights, the colour scheme, the bathroom furniture, the bathroom fixtures, and even the bathroom accessories in comparison to the floor.

While those other elements are undoubtedly important to the effect of any bathroom design, the flooring deserves a closer look as well. Of course safety is a primary concern with regard to choosing the design and materials for your bathroom floor, but there is certainly no reason why aesthetic appeal should be discounted entirely, especially since there are loads of options available in tiles and other bathroom flooring materials. Even tiles that are made of slip proof materials are available in a wide variety of designs and colours so you have the best of both worlds in safety and good design.

Vinyl flooring has been a popular material for bathroom floors for many years now, mostly due to their durability, low cost and easy maintenance. There are also various other natural and synthetic materials to choose from, many of which are designed just as much for form as function. It is important to choose carefully however as the flooring is not something that you can change easily or inexpensively. You have to be sure then that whatever floor design you go for will work well with the wide variety of bathroom decorations and furniture that you plan to bring in later on.

Ideas for Bunk Beds

posted by crossteam

If you have two or more children sharing a room with limited space and want a fun and comfortable sleeping solution, bunk beds may be the ideal solution for you. Space is often a precious commodity in contemporary children’s bedrooms, and bunk beds can be a particularly good choice where space is an issue.

Aside from the space-saving features important to parents, bunk beds can also bring an unmistakable feeling of fun and excitement to a child. While the novelty of bunk beds may fade somewhat as your children grow older and their interests change, the convenience and appeal of bunk beds will likely remain with them for quite some time.

Even older children can benefit from having bunk beds, particularly if they have to share rooms with one or more siblings. The top bunk is usually reserved for the older children, and this will give them an additional amount of privacy and space in which to sleep in.

Safety considerations are particularly important when it comes to bunk beds. You will want to make sure the child occupying the top bunk is responsible enough to handle it, and you must make sure they do not engage in any risky activities while on top. In any case, you will still want to install safety guardrails on the top bunk–and possibly even the lower one if your child is still quite young–and this will provide an added measure of safety.

Purchasing Products and Accessories for Your Bathroom

posted by crossteam

With the many bathroom accessories that we use day in and day out, you might as well consider them an integral part of bathroom design. If you are in the planning stages of the design of your new bathroom, you might want to pay particular attention to how the individual products and accessories you buy will affect the design of the bathroom as a whole.

Thankfully there are many places that currently sell bathroom accessories in a wide variety of styles, a few of which should be appropriate to the kind of look that you are going for. By all means, you should check out stores that specialize in bathroom accessories, as these are great places to see bathroom suites fully set up with everything in place so you can get a better idea of how things will work together. Don’t forget to drop by DIY outlets too however, as they have many of the same items at lower prices.

When planning for bathroom accessories, you will also want to take into consideration the materials that are used and how they will affect the overall design of your bathroom. Bathroom accessories and fixtures can be made out of anything from cast iron and glass to plastic and acrylic. All of these materials will have their own strengths and disadvantages, and you will have to keep them in mind with regard to how you will use these accessories. Also make sure that you take note of their size and how well they will fit into your planned bathroom design.
