Making Your Bed Comfy and Cozy All Winter

posted by crossteam

When winter is fast approaching, we all feel the need to have a nice comfy bed to snuggle in. Cold weather means it is time to dig out the heavy artillery from your linen closet. Your flannel sheets, comforters, and heavy blankets will make an appearance at this time. Here, we offer you some tips on how to care for them.

•    If the washer and dryer you have at home are too small, it might be a good idea to take your winter beddings to a commercial laundry that has machines big enough to handle even the heaviest comforters. This will not only result in cleaner beddings, it will also avoid damaging your washer and dryer with loads that are too heavy for them.

•    It may surprise you to know that most down comforters can actually be washed safely. It is important to read the manufacturer’s instructions carefully and use only the mildest soap possible.

•    Put some tennis balls into the dryer when drying your down comforters to minimize clumping and allow the down to maintain its fluffiness. To ensure a long life for your comforter, it is recommended that they be washed once a month at most.

•    For softer comforters and beddings, you may want to use fabric softening sheets as opposed to liquid softeners. This will ensure a more even distribution of the fabric softening ingredients and prevent static electricity from building up.

Before You Buy a New Bed

posted by crossteam

Bed size is one of the most important factors that will influence your purchase of a new bed for your bedroom. Of course its look, construction, materials, and style will have some bearing on your decision, but these tend to pale into the background in comparison with space considerations. After all, the size of the bed will determine how well you and your partner are going to fit in it. Along with the mattress quality and firmness, bed size will have a considerable effect on how well both of you will be able to sleep.

As much as we would all like to have a bed that is big enough for our purposes, space limitations often make it quite difficult to get the size of bed that we really want. Even if the room itself is large enough to fit the size of bed that you are after, keep in mind that getting the bed into the room is another issue. Not all doors are built to the same size, and you may find that you have trouble even getting your dream bed through the door!

Most standard bed sizes should be more than adequate for most people. If you have special size requirements – if you are quite tall for instance – you may want to look at your options for extra long beds. Thankfully, there are many options for bed sizes currently available in the stores, and you should have very little trouble finding a bed that is just the right size for you.

Maximizing the look of your bathroom interior

posted by crossteam

There was a time when not much thought was given to the look and feel of the bathroom. Today however, more and more people are getting hip to the idea that bathrooms deserve just as much care and attention in the planning and design stages as the rest of the house. After all, although the times that we spend in the bathroom may be infrequent, they can add up to a considerable amount of time in the course of the day. While function is of course an important factor to consider in bathroom design, some thought must be given to its look and feel as well.

Thankfully there are plenty of ways by which you can enhance the look and feel of your bathroom, even if you feel that you are constrained by the space available or are tied with an unchangeable design. Colour is one of the most important elements of design, and it is no different in designing your bathroom. Think about what atmosphere you are trying to achieve and plan out your colour scheme accordingly. Are you going for a minimalist look or are you after a more homey and cosy feel? Determining your exact design goal will help you hone in on the proper colours to use.

When choosing the other elements such as bathroom furniture and bathroom fixtures, you should also make sure that they work with the overall design of the bathroom. Keep in mind that almost anything can work provided you thoroughly plan out your vision of how the bathroom should be designed.

Bed Linen Storage and Care

posted by crossteam

With all the many bed linens that you will buy in the course of your lifetime, the amount of money that you spend could add up significantly. Bed linens should really be seen as an investment of sorts, and skimping on a few pennies now may mean having to deal with bed linen that does not last as long as you may have expected. It is important to be clued in to the proper care and storage of bed linen so that you can get a lot of quality use out of them for a long time to come.

•    Keep in mind that different types of bed linens will require their own specific methods of care and storage, even if they look a lot alike to you. It is important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully with regard to their use, storage, and care.

•    Keeping three sets of bed linens on hand is a good idea since it will allow you to have one set on the bed being used, another in storage for quick replacement, and one set in the laundry.

•    Make sure that you use all sets of your bed linen equally in order to lessen the wear and tear on any one particular set.

•    Bed linen should ideally be changed every week, depending on the climate where you live. Places with hotter or more humid climates may require more frequent changes.

•    When using the same fabric for bed sheets in your pillowcases, wash them less often in order to preserve their life.

Add Fun to Your Child’s Bedroom with Bunk Beds

posted by crossteam

Let’s face it: kids will always want to have a bit of fun, even with something that should be a fairly sedentary activity such as sleeping. Young children in particular tend to be a finicky lot when it comes to their bedrooms, and beds are always an important consideration in terms of how the bedroom will be received.

One thing that will surely please even the most discriminating child bedroom critic is the addition of a bunk bed in their room. This type of bed is the perfect solution for rooms occupied by two or more children, and a bunk bed adds a lot of fun and excitement to the room.

Most bunk beds are typically made out of different types of wood, many of which will work well with the particular bedroom design that you have in mind. If the wood has a particularly attractive grain, you can opt to leave it unpainted and merely apply a light protective finish. Or, you can paint the wood to better suit the overall colour scheme that you have planned.

Some bunk beds are also constructed out of metal, which makes them more durable and last much longer. This is a particularly important concern if your children are in the active stage wherein wooden bunk beds may not hold up to regular normal use. Regardless of the type of material that you choose, you can be certain that your bunk beds will be enjoyed and cherished for many years to come.

Designing Bathrooms for Form and Function

posted by crossteam

Bathrooms are one of the most important rooms in any home, and while it is mainly a functional space, there is no reason why it should not be visually pleasing as well. Gone are the days when bathrooms were designed purely with function in mind, and today’s well-designed bathrooms can truly stand as pleasant and comfortable rooms in their own right. Here then are some tips on how you can design your bathroom for maximum form and function.

•    Tiling your bathroom is one of the best ways to enhance or update its look. Even with a limited budget, there are many options for tiles available to you. You may want to keep in mind that you can buy tiles by the piece so it is important to measure the floor space that you have to cover and calculate exactly how many tiles you will need.

•    Try to design your bathroom so that it fits in well with the adjacent room or hallway even with the door open. Of course the door will be closed most of the time but in a house with a large family, the bathroom door is often left open giving a view of its contents to people standing outside.

•    Lighting is a crucial consideration in any space but it is even more so in a bathroom, since many of them do not have windows. As much as you would want to keep your bathroom well-lit at all times, you will want to plan it out carefully, keeping lighting budget, electrical consumption and of course aesthetic appeal in mind.

Bringing Your Bathroom into the Modern Age

posted by crossteam

In a large number of houses today, the bathroom is one of the rooms that more often than not has seen better years. Most people seem to be content to leave the bathroom in the same condition it has been for the past several years, leaving the bulk of their renovation and beautification efforts to the rest of the house. If you are redoing or redecorating the rest of your house however, there is simply no reason why you should not do a bathroom makeover. The bathroom is someplace that you go to on a regular basis after all, so you really should strive to keep it updated in relation to the rest of the house.

Colour is a great way to liven up any room, and it is a great way to bring your bathroom up to speed in the modern age. Of course you are free to choose any colour scheme that you want but if you are going after a contemporary look, you might want to check out current trends in colour schemes in home design magazines or on the Internet. If a certain look or motif grabs you, you can copy it as closely as you want but feel free to adapt them to your own personal tastes and preferences as well.

A good rule of thumb to follow is less is more. Resist the temptation to slather on more than two colours that belong to different colour families. While the effect may be novel for a time, seeing it day in and day out may make it less appealing.

Choosing a Mattress and Bedstead

posted by crossteam

If you have had your divan bed and mattress for a number of years and are looking into replacing only the mattress, you may want to consider replacing the base as well. The base is prone to wear and tear just like the mattress, albeit to a lesser degree.

When making the choice between a divan bed and a bedstead, most people will opt for the divan bed, thinking that it will be far more comfortable. While this is true in many cases, what if you simply must have a bedstead? It is important to bear in mind that a bedstead is not actually a bed in itself, but rather a piece of furniture that you put a mattress on in order to make the bed. The mattress then takes on a primary consideration in your purchase. There is simply not much sense in spending several hundred dollars on a bedstead, then skimping on the mattress thinking that you can merely replace it after a few months.

If you are in the market for a bedstead, make sure that you inspect the base thoroughly for solidity and robust construction. If it does not feel hefty or solid when brand new, think about how it will be like several years later on. You should definitely resist the temptation to buy a cheap bedstead, as it is a decision that you may end up regretting when you find that it does not stay in satisfactory condition for very long.

Why Go for Bunk Beds?

posted by crossteam

Every one of us needs a good night of comfortable sleep on a regular basis, which is why the importance of buying a suitable bed cannot be underestimated. We should ideally be spending as much as eight hours of sleep on our beds every night, although of course this is not always possible. In any case, you may want to consider buying bunk beds, especially if you have a room that two or more children will occupy.

So why should you opt for bunk beds in preference to the other types of beds commonly available? The most obvious benefit of bunk beds is that they allow you to maximize the available space in your bedroom. With many of today’s current bedrooms being fairly constrained by space limitations, having bunk beds makes more sense than having a traditional bed design.

There are many different types of bunk beds from which to choose, including twin bunks to combination beds that feature a split design on top and a full bed on the bottom. There are also many options for loft-style bunk beds that can provide even more storage options, as well as serve the space saving functions of typical bunk beds.

If your children have a lot of toys and assorted knick-knacks, bunk beds with built-in storage compartments are excellent choices for children’s bedrooms. The compartments will keep these things out of the way, yet provide easy access when they are needed.
